Of course, Trump's own bequest could well up being ruinous: if he does get the nomination, his racism, xenophobia, and megalomania would hopefully condemn the G.O.P. to a massive defeat. But even then, the party establishment, in picking up the pieces, would have to deal with the issues and fault lines that his candidacy has exposed.
To transform a political party, hat wide brim you need a clear message, a broad electoral base, and allies within the existing power structure. Trump now has all three of these things. As I've pointed out before , his claim that Washington is broken and can only be fixed by an outsider resonates with many Americans, and not just arch-conservatives. So does his demagoguery about illegal immigrants and the supposed threat that Muslims present. What is perhaps more surprising, at least to Washington-based conservatives, is how many Republicans are also embracing Trump's populist lines on ending free trade, protecting Social Security, and providing basic health care.
Hundreds of protesters shouted: "Racists go home!" Police wearing riot helmets formed a line between the two groups. Further down the street, small clumps of supporters and protesters started heated debates, with each side holding up their smartphones to record the interaction. Police released pepper balls and made three arrests. A helicopter circled overhead as police warned that those who stayed in the area risked arrest.
But as much as populism was borne out of the economic and cultural dispossession of little people, rarely do we associate it with a particular subset of little people for whom populists seldom speak: ethnic minorities and African-Americans who, arguably, are and have been christy's hat the most economically and culturally dispossessed of all Americans, and who can certainly make an equal claim that they built this country and never got credit for it.Behavioral economics teaches us that people are far more motivated to avoid a loss than acquire a gain and invest far more emotion to prevent a loss than benefit from a gain which suggests that politicians who promise to reaffirm the status of erstwhile dominant constituencies will gain far more enthusiastic support than those who simply promise new and  liam gallagher bucket hat bigger programs to help people pursue their American dream . |
